Realistic Resolutions – Promise Keepers and Problem Solvers

dreamstimefree_197178Alright my weight loss oriented friends. New Year’s Eve is upon us and everyone is getting ready to start making those New Year’s resolutions right? It occurred to me after reading an article I shared on Facebook yesterday entitled “Make a new kind of New Year’s Resolution,” that when we make these resolutions what we are really doing is trying to resolve problems in our life.

A man named Eldrdige Cleaver once said “You are either part of the solution or you are part of the problem”

So often as we attempt to travel a path of wellness and work our way through our weight loss journey this proves to be true. All too often we are the source of our own problems; as a wellness coach, part of my job is to help people find the answers to those problems. Most the time we know the solution to a problem, we just haven’t decided to act on it yet. We’re contemplating the pros and cons and deciding whether or not the actions and steps we need to take are worth the desired outcome to us in the end.

All too often we set resolutions in the beginning of the year that we can’t keep or that we’re not quite prepared to take the steps towards, often times out of mere obligation to make a New Year’s Resolution because society tells us that we should.

What I want to remind you Slender Seekers, is that although January 1st marks the beginning of a new year, it doesn’t mark the beginning of a new you, and there are three hundred and sixty-five days ahead of you in 2014 where each and every day is the dawn of a new day, a new tomorrow and a chance for you to do something differently than you have done it before. Each day is a new day for you to learn from the last.

Whether you want to lose weight, work on toning your body, work on eating cleaner or healthier, quit smoking, drink less alcohol, or any of the usual things we hear everyone make resolutions about in the beginning of each year; the truth of the matter is, you want to improve something, you want to be a better you, you want to be a problem solver.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned this year comes from two people I look up to immensely, Chris Powell and Heidi Powell. One of the things Chris teaches about changing your mindset is the theory of self-integrity and being a promise keeper. You see me live this philosophy on a regular basis. When I commit to something and say this is what I will do this week, whether it my workout, my eating plan or just making sure I take the time to read and pamper myself with a bubble bath and a good cup of tea; I make sure I keep that commitment. The more little commitments I keep the more personal integrity I have; and if the time comes that I fall short, I make sure that I make it up to myself so that I don’t let myself down.

This promise keeper mentality along with my own problem solver philosophy has become an essential part of how I stay motivated, adhere to my fitness, nutrition and wellness paths, set my goals, decide where I am going next and what problem I will work on next; and is a strategy I often share with those that come to me seeking guidance on their wellness path or help finding their motivation.

So as we begin this New Year together, I invite you to not make specified resolutions or come up with some long daunting list of things you want to do but have no idea where to begin.

Instead, make a promise to yourself that what you will do in 2014 is work on being a promise keeper and a problem solver, work on keeping promises to yourself one day at a time, and resolving your problems one at a time and when you have achieved it, move on to the next one. Look at each day as a chance to be a better you. By doing this, you’re setting yourself up for lots of success and celebrations throughout the year and  hopefully a few months from now you might not look back on that list of “New Year’s” resolutions and be disappointed.

Celebrating Our Weight Loss Journeys – Do The Slender

1175659_10201206136427476_1515660317_nJust four months ago this bariatric fitness guru was in Phoenix with some fellow Weight Loss Surgery Patients at the Second Annual Your Weight Matters Convention put on by the Obesity Action Coalition. We were getting ready to start the Walk from Obesity put on by the ASMBS and I was on a scooter because I wasn’t allowed to exercise after just having my fourth round of reconstructive plastic surgery.

It had become a tradition for me to throw my hands in the air in pictures. People ask me how it started; it’s really a simple thing. As I started getting involved in the Weight Loss community by means of social media I saw that lots of folks posted their successes and achievements and I wanted a way to cheer them on. So, I started posting this symbol – \O/ –DssButton2FB2-150x150

You might notice that the logo for Desperately Seeking Slender includes a little stick figure throwing their arms in the air in this manner.  It was my way of saying…

“Yay! Go you! You’re doing a great job!”

Soon I started taking photos in the same pose as that little stick figure and let’s be honest, they haven’t all been flattering. But they were all fun, and they were my way of celebrating not only my weight loss journey but that of my blog readers.

You’ll often seem me throw that \O/ behind a comment on a post where I want to celebrate someone’s success, cheer them on and give them a “Way to go.” – It’s like a virtual cheer, a Pandora high-five. Every once in a while if I’m really feeling the need to cheer you’ll even see me throw some pom poms up there and the symbol looks like this @\O/@

Back in August at the OAC Convention I had just had a brachioplasty and my arms got sore very easily. Knowing this, one of the more predominant bloggers in the WLS community looked over at me and asked “Do you need us to do the Slender for you?” The Slender! She called it the Slender, and in that moment, I was so excited. “The Slender,” I have no idea why someone giving it a name felt like such an accomplishment to me but it did. It validated it for me in a new way; it made it something that was a recognized aspect of something I have worked hard to bring to the community.

The Slender; is something that motivates the heck out of me. Every time I get my fellow obesity fighters to throw their hands up in the air I feel that passion in me to help others with their weight loss journeys burning inside me.
